Retaining walls hold back grade changes. They're common in Henderson hillside lots, Summerlin tiered yards, Anthem's decomposed-granite slopes, and anywhere a driveway cut or a landscape terrace creates more than about two feet of grade separation.

Walls under roughly 4 feet in height can typically be built by a C-10 partner without engineered drawings or a permit — check your jurisdiction and lot constraints. Above that height, Clark County and most Las Vegas-area municipalities require engineered drawings, a structural permit, and often C-14 masonry scope on the install. A good partner tells you which side of the line your job falls on before quoting.

The single failure mode for retaining walls is drainage. A wall built without a proper drain rock layer and a perforated drain pipe behind it will hold water during monsoon, build hydrostatic pressure, and fail — sometimes catastrophically. Good partners spec the drainage as a primary part of the design, not an afterthought.
